Today marks the beginning of the 10th week of my 18 week marathon training schedule. So, I am half way there! It has been a great 9 weeks – building up to 36 miles last week from a start of about 20. I have been self-motivated, healthy, and it hasn’t rained in the morning but one time! My biggest complaint has been blisters, awful blisters, which I have almost solved by taping up each toe before I run more than about 4 miles. My long run last week was 16 miles and I was fine during the run, and I was able to run 4 the next day!
As the days get shorter, darker and colder, I am sure I will have my days where I don’t want to get out of bed. Summit isn’t very well lit in the morning, and at 5:30 am it is black as pitch. The last few mornings I had to use my iPhone flashlight app to see the ground. I also wear my reflective vest so I am visible to cars. Soon it will be cold enough to break out the reflective jacket and gloves.
Another thing that has always helped me stay motivated in the cold weather is running with other people. That is why I organized RunSummit.org. so we can get a core group together and support each other through the cold, dark morning runs! Come join us on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00am at the Grand Summit Hotel – it is still a little bit light out at that time. If you have other times you’d prefer to get a group together, let me know and I will post it here. We also have the Saturday run at 8:30am – the sun is well up by then!
